Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a very high purity thermoplastic fluoropolymer, since it is a homopolymer without additives, e.g. Stabilizers and dyes. As a result, PVDF is physiologically harmless and can be used in the ultrapure media range. In addition, it has a high mechanical strength and a very good chemical resistance. Compared to other fluoroplastics, PVDF is easy and easy to process.
Due to its chemical structure, PVDF has good resistance to UV and gamma irradiation and is very resistant to aging. Since it is a translucent material, the media are exposed to UV radiation.
PVDF is suitable for safe use for articles intended for repeated contact with foodstuffs according to FDA "Title 21, Code of Regulations (USA) Chapter 1, part 177.2510". PVDF is approved for use in processing plants and storage facilities of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). PVDF also complies with the criteria of the "3-A Sanitary Standards for Multiple-Use Plastic Materials Used as Product Contact Surfaces for Dairy Equipment, Serial-No.2000".
The surface of PVDF forms an unfavorable substrate for the growth of microorganisms as well as glass. This is the conclusion of a study carried out by Solvay of the Center for the Development and Development of Industries Alimentaires et Chimiques (CERIA in Brussels). Because of this property, PVDF is used in the food industry (e.g., in dairies) as well as in the pharmaceutical industry (e.g., for sterilizable precision dosing pipettes) and in the ultrapure media sector of the semiconductor industry.
PVDF has a remarkable resistance to most inorganic and organic acids, oxidizing media, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols and halogen-containing solvents. It is resistant to halogens - especially bromine (but not fluorine) - and weak alkalis. It is decomposed by fuming sulfuric acid, a few strongly basic amines, concentrated and hot alkalis as well as alkali metals. In highly polar solvents, such as acetone and ethyl acetate, it swells and is somewhat soluble in aprotic solvents such as dimethylformamide and dimethyl sulfoxide.
